Hanson Marek Bolkcom & Greene, Ltd.
With Equal Right, October 2001

Hanson Marek Bolkcom & Greene, Ltd., was founded on January 1, 1996, by four partners from a large Minneapolis law firm.  Two of the four founding members of the firm are attorneys Mary E. Bolkcom and Lezlie Ott Marek.  In addition, the firm employs six other woman employees, including three highly experienced legal assistants.

Hanson Marek Bolkcom & Greene was formed with the belief that clients could best be served by a combination of high level expertise from years of trying cases, together with the efficiencies that can be achieved in a small organization.  The size and composition of the law firm has also allowed it to maintain the kind of flexibility and family friendly environment that is often lacking in larger, more traditional environments.

Both Bolkcom and Marek play key roles in developing business, trying cases across the country for large corporate clients, and managing the law firm. The firm practices in the areas of product liability and personal injury defense, employment, premises liability, and commercial litigation.   The firm’s attorneys have tried cases in venues as diverse as eastern Appalachia and the deep South, to California and New York City.

All of the shareholders, and all of the women employees of the firm are parents.  The firm has made it a high priority to implement policies that benefit women, as well as families.  The firm distinguishes itself from those where a mostly-male management creates and implements policies to benefit women.  At Hanson Marek Bolkcom & Greene, the women are not only the beneficiaries of such policies, but are also the originators of them.

The firm’s work environment is also highly supportive of women, and encourages their professional development.  “We help each other in our practices so that important family events can take priority over the rigors of our practice, without sacrificing the quality service our clients value,” said Marek.  The firm offers a highly flexible work schedule.  Some of its employees have worked part-time while their children were young, and then returned to work on a fuller schedule as their circumstances changed.  A generous maternity leave policy has been used by both adoptive and biological parents.  The firm has also taken advantage of technology and innovation to allow employees to access their offices from home, permitting busy parents to meet the needs of their children.

According to Marek, the firm proudly offers a workplace that values employees as people, and it has been rewarded with extremely hard-working and loyal employees at every level. “We believe our success as a firm and as individual lawyers is the result of encouraging and maintaining a work environment that is a healthy and happy one,” said Marek.
