100% Club Spotlight By Dyan J. Ebert. Ms. Ebert is a shareholder in the firm of Quinlivan & Hughes, P.A. and former president of the Central Minnesota Chapter of MWL. Quinlivan & Hughes, P.A., is a law firm built on tradition. Ray Quinlivan started the law firm of Atwood & Quinlivan in 1923. His three sons, Richard, Roger and John, perpetuated the Quinlivan legacy in the years that followed. Similarly, the firm of Hughes & Hughes began when Fred Hughes and his son, Keith, started practicing together in 1962. In 1998, the firm of Quinlivan & Hughes, P.A. was formed. The primarily practice area of Quinlivan & Hughes include litigation, insurance defense, employment, business, and estates and trusts. There are 25 attorneys currently employed by Quinlivan & Hughes. The firm’s primary office is in St. Cloud, with satellite offices in Rochester and Little Falls. Quinlivan & Hughes has demonstrated a commitment to acknowledging, addressing and accommodating issues that are important to women attorneys. The firm encourages its attorneys to participate in Minnesota Women Lawyers and provides firm resources for such participation. The firm also contributed to the organization of the Central Minnesota Chapter of MWL by providing financial assistance, leadership and other resources. The firm’s commitment to issues unique to women attorneys was tested a couple of years back when four of the five women attorneys working at the firm were pregnant and due to deliver within the same year. The firm allowed the women to choose what length of leave they wanted, offered short-term disability benefits and hired a temporary associate to help with file loads and project work during that year. This resulted in a reduction of missed or delayed work, and more importantly, it helped make the transition back to practice easier for the new moms. The firm’s appreciation of the importance of family is also demonstrated in the flexible work schedules is offers to its attorneys. Since the birth of her first child in 1996, Melinda Sanders has worked a part-time schedule. Shelly Davis recently returned to practice on a part-time schedule with the firm after a five-year leave of absence following the birth of her twin boys. Susan Roberts, a newly hired associate with the firm, also works a reduced hours schedule which allows her time for her family. Additionally, the firm provides remote access capabilities to the attorneys and staff to enable contact with the office from home computers. Quinlivan & Hughes is a participant in the Minnesota Bar Association’s Self Audit for Gender Equality (S.A.G.E.) project. Quinlivan & Hughes is proud to be an MWL 100% Club Member.
