Member Spotlight Anita Arockiasamy is focused on what is important to her: family, friends, the practice of law, and a strong commitment to community involvement. A problem solver with a zeal for helping others, Anita has proven to be a great asset at Halleland Lewis Nilan Sipkins & Johnson, where she focuses on health care regulation and litigation issues ranging from corporate compliance and provider agreements to managed care liability disputes and medical malpractice defense. Her commitment to improving our community is evident in her long-standing devotion to serving others. While attending the Convent of the Visitation School and the University of Notre Dame, Anita learned the importance of benevolence and service. Her dedication continued through law school, as Anita represented her graduating class on the University of Minnesota Law School’s Public Service Committee, participated in the Minnesota State Bar Association Community Outreach Committee, and served low-income individuals through housing advocacy services and shelter-meal programs. Anita also recognized the importance of community involvement through the Minnesota Women Lawyers Association here she served as the student liaison to MWL during her second and third years of law school. Anita continues to serve both MWL and our community, believing that “as professionals, it is our responsibility to share our time and talents.” Her many volunteer activities include reading to kindergartners at Bethune Elementary, mentoring University of Minnesota law students, and acting as a judge for the Minnesota State Bar Association Mock Trial Association. She also serves on the Convent of the Visitation School Alumnae Board, where she helps to educate the community on the benefit of single-sex education and alumnae on the importance of continuing their relationship with the school so that future generations may benefit from its excellent education opportunities and rich traditions. As a new attorney in a law firm setting, Anita faces the challenge of successfully integrating her dedication to public service into her new and hectic lifestyle. Halleland Lewis Nilan Sipkins & Johnson helps her to do so, as its core values of trust, excellence, diversity, and community correspond with Anita’s personal principles. “Although it is a business, the foundation of the law firm is its emphasis on serving its clients and the community.” Furthermore, working in health care gives Anita an opportunity to serve the community. Her practice is not limited to representing large insurers, as she also works with private physicians, hospitals, nursing homes, community initiatives and community clinics. Anita also continues her commitment to MWL by frequently helping with events and projects. For example, she recently hared her viewpoints as a panel speaker on Practical Marketing Skills for Women Attorneys, commenting that involvement in MWL and her volunteer activities have helped her reach her career and personal goals. Representing the next generation of women lawyers, Anita believes it is important for MWL to continue growing and increase its breadth of representation. “MWL is a fantastic resource. It has provided me with wonderful networking opportunities, which in turn has exposed me to mentors with whom I can discuss how to handle challenges and opportunities. ”Especially as a new practitioner, Anita recognizes that it is important to know that your legal adversary is also a real person. She believes that cultivating more mentor relationships is crucial. By doing so, each generation can exchange guidance and promote a sense of empathy. As a friend, Anita is an exceptional listener who always offers honest and thoughtful advice; as a fellow woman lawyer, Anita is a role model for both new and seasoned attorneys.
