UST School of Law 2007 Mission Award for Service and Community
On Tuesday, March 13th, 2007, the UST Women’s Law Student Association was
presented with one of the four 2007 Mission Awards for Service and Community.
The University presented this award to the WLSA at the annual Mission Awards
Luncheon on Tuesday, March 13, 2007 at the Law School. Below is an excerpt of
the speech and introduction that Vincent A. Thomas, Assistant Dean for Student
Affairs, gave to the group of young women:
WLSA Introduction and Presentation:
Our third Service and Community award recipient is a student organization, the
Women’s Law Student Association. Second-year student Shannon Gherty, and the
Executive Committee of the WLSA will accept the award on behalf of the
Association.
The Women’s Law Student Association has served both the Law School community and
the broader community with distinction this year. The Association served the
broader community when it sponsored Breast Cancer Awareness Week last October.
The Association raised $1000 for the American Cancer Society through t-shirt
sales and a cancer survivor’s luncheon. The Association co-sponsored heart
awareness week with the UST Law School’s Health Law Society this spring, and
raised money for the American Heart Association. The Association also organized
a service opportunity for students at a family shelter.
The Association served the Law School community by co-sponsoring the “Real
Women, Real Careers” breakfast series with the Career and Professional
Development Office. The Association and CPD invite women lawyers from a variety
of backgrounds and practice areas to talk with UST law students about career
issues, with special attention to the challenges of balancing career and family
commitments with personal needs and goals. The Association also co-sponsored a
presentation on women and money by author Suze Orman here at the Law School. It
has a second service opportunity at Feed My Starving Children planned for this
month, and will host a Female Faculty and Staff Appreciation Lunch.
We present a 2007 Service and Community Award to the Women’s Law Student
Association with gratitude for the Association’s outstanding service to both the
Law School and the broader communities. We look forward to the contributions
that we know the Association will continue to make to both communities in the
future.
