MWL Teams with Sexual Violence Center and Volunteer Lawyers Network
The
Sexual Violence Center (SVC) was established in 1985 as an independent non-profit organization, with the twin goals of supporting individuals affected by sexual violence and fostering attitude changes that will ultimately eradicate sexual violence.  SVC provides more than 2000 youth and adults each year with 24-hour crisis phone service, individual counseling, support groups, advocacy and legal clinics at no cost. The ages of clients served range from 12 to over 65.  Women made up 88% of the primary victims served, and 24% of those served were from traditionally underserved communities. Eighteen percent of primary and secondary victims reported physical, developmental, or mental disabilities. All services provided by SVC are offered free of charge.

Clinic:  Providing Free Legal Advice to Sexual Violence Survivors

MWL volunteers provide legal assistance to survivors of sexual violence at a VLN legal clinic at the SVC in North Minneapolis. The clinic runs from 6-8pm on the second Thursday of each month. MWL members assist victim/survivors by informing them of their rights, advising them on navigating the legal system, and recommending legal resources outside the clinic setting. Topics may include orders for protection, restraining orders, privacy issues, housing, education, employment, immigration, statutes of limitation, divorce, child custody, and child support.

Volunteer lawyers make a 2-hour commitment to advise clinic clients on-site.  Volunteers will not be providing ongoing legal representation to clinic clients. The clinic is primarily appointment-based and clients will be screened by SVC staff in advance.

VLN will provide resource materials, malpractice insurance, and periodic trainings on sexual violence issues.

Foster Child Advocacy Project (FCAP): FCAP pairs an attorney and social worker to provide legal representation to children and youth in foster care. In the past four years, FCAP has demonstrated that giving youth a voice in abuse and neglect proceedings can increase the youth's confidence in the outcome, and that advocacy for services can yield positive results.

State Wards Project: Beginning in 1999, CLC began working with Hennepin County Juvenile Court to advocate for state wards, or children whose parents' rights have been terminated. CLC staff represent the child's wishes for his or her current situation.

Transitions: Moving towards Independent Living: Transitions is a CLC initiative that provides legal representation and services to assist foster youth in a successful transition from foster care to adulthood.

Volunteer Attorneys: Provide Legal Representation in Asylum and Detention

Lack of experience is not a barrier to providing pro bono representation to asylum seekers. Asylum cases are carefully screened by The Advocates for eligibility for asylum in the U.S. Volunteers are teamed with experienced immigration attorneys and have the support of the staff.  Volunteers are provided with a copy of The Advocates Volunteer Attorney Manual and are encouraged to attend the Annual Asylum Conference.  Practice Alerts keep volunteers updated on changes in law and procedure. If you are interested in representing an asylum seeker, click here to join our volunteer attorney listerv, then join probono.net/asylum and view a list of current asylum cases in need of volunteer attorneys.

Attorneys practicing immigration law are urgently needed to serve as mentors to volunteer asylum attorneys and to provide help to clients at walk-in legal clinics and at detained master calendar hearings. If you are interested in volunteering in this capacity, please email Miranda Morgan at mmorgan@advrights.org.
