MWL Attorney to Attorney Mentor Program MWL's Attorney to Attorney Mentor Program brings together experienced women attorneys and newer attorneys to create networking and social opportunities. The program offers monthly luncheons featuring a variety of topics and activities, such as "Speed-Networking," with the goal for attorneys to establish informal mentoring relationships. Please note: The Attorney to Attorney Mentor program does not "match" attorneys, but rather provides the environment for networking. Visit Calendar of Events for latest information on upcoming mentor luncheons. Not sure if it's right for you? See testimonial about the Attorney to Attorney Mentor Program below: “I was interested in finding a mentor but hated to impose on someone who had a busy schedule,” says Mary Powers, in-house counsel at GMAC Residential Funding Corp. Mary located her mentor, Bonnie Bennett, through MWL's Attorney to Attorney mentor program. “However, Bonnie suggested the best times and dates for our meetings and helped us build mutual expectations right up front.” Mary has seen tremendous benefits in her mentoring relationship. She found it particularly helpful to talk with someone who had experienced corporate uncertainty before. “When one of my previous companies was put up for sale, I found Bonnie's advice and experience invaluable. I learned that she had gone through (and survived) the same experience herself at one of her former corporate positions. Having a mentor who can provide you with a dispassionate view of your situation at about 20,000 feet helps clarify your thinking just when you need it the most.” But mentoring doesn't result in benefits flowing only to the mentee. “One of the things that always astonishes me about mentoring is how much I receive from the relationship,” says Bonnie Bennett, Mary's mentor and a past Co-Chair of MWL's Attorney Mentoring Committee. “I find that mentoring really brings into focus what I have learned from past experiences, and reminds me of how far I have come.” After serving as a mentor to a number of women lawyers over the years, Bonnie finds that she underestimated how valuable her experience and support could be to her mentees. “You know, we all undervalue ourselves and our accomplishments. When Mary went back to work after the birth of her second child, she asked me, ‘You have two small kids -how do you manage to get out the door every morning with everybody all in one piece?' Helping a new mother understand that you can manage your career and your parenthood successfully is extremely empowering. I think we all need role models and we can all be role models in many different ways.” |
