MWL Public Policy Advocacy Committee
Action on Fair Pay Restoration Act
December, 2007

In December, MWL’s newest committee, the Public Policy Advocacy Committee (PPA), took its first official action to advocate and protect the rights of all women.

After PPA Committee recommendation and executive board approval, Kari Thomas, President of MWL, signed a letter on behalf of our organization to our U.S. Senators urging them to pass The Fair Pay Restoration Act.  This legislation has passed the House of Representatives and will be considered by the Senate this month.  This legislation has received support from over 250 women’s organizations and numerous legal organizations have done so as well.

The Fair Pay Restoration Action would reverse the Supreme Court’s decision in Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. and help to ensure that individuals subjected to unlawful compensation discrimination are able to effectively assert their rights under the federal anti-discrimination laws.

The bill would reinstate prior law to make clear that compensation discrimination claims accrue whenever a discriminatory compensation decision or practice is adopted, when a person becomes subject to the decision or practice, or when a person is affected by the decision or practice, including whenever he or she receives a discriminatory paycheck.

Recall that PPA Committee has undertaken pay equity as one of its four focus areas (domestic violence, girl empowerment and access to justice being the other three).  The committee found this legislation to be an important step to helping women achieve pay equity and better able assert their rights when they have been victims of pay discrimination.
