Who
We Are:
The YWCA of Minneapolis is
an affiliate of Girls Inc.®, offering girl-specific programming with a focus on
leadership, math and science, economic literacy, and pregnancy prevention. Girls
Inc.® at the YWCA of Minneapolis programming takes place in the Minneapolis
Public Schools and at YWCA locations.
Girls Inc.® is a nonprofit
organization that inspires all girls to be strong, smart, and bold. With local
roots dating to 1864 and national status since 1945, Girls Inc.® has responded
to the changing needs of girls and their communities through research based
programs and advocacy that empower girls to reach their full potential and
understand, value, and assert their rights.
Programs:
 | Contact Plus
is a comprehensive sexuality education program providing services to girls and
boys in classroom, as well as, small-group settings. Youth in Contact Plus
learn about themselves, their relationships with others and how to communicate
assertively in order to make responsible decisions about their sexual health.
Girls Inc. Preventing Adolescent Pregnancy® is provided in a
girl-specific environment as a component of the YWCA Contact Plus Program.
Contact Plus operates in over 15 Minneapolis Public Schools. For more
information, contact 612-215-4361. |
 | Discovery Leadership
engages girls in social action projects in partnership with women to create
lasting change in the community. Together, girls and women celebrate their
heritage, discover the leaders within themselves, and practice the skills of
leadership through social action. Discovery Leadership was created in
partnership with Girls Incorporated and includes both components of Girls Inc.
Leadership and Community Action -- DiscoverySM and In
Our Own HandsSM. For more information, contact 612-215-4375. |
 | Girl Power®
is a hands-on, math and science program provided in a safe, fun, all-girl
environment. Girl Power develops confidence and skills in math and science
with an emphasis placed on economic literacy. Girl Power introduces girls to
career opportunities related to math and science, which may provide means for
economic independence as adults. Girl Power includes
Girls Inc. Operation SMART® and Girls Inc. Economic
Literacy®. For more information, contact 612-215-4375. |
 | Girls' RAP
(Resolution and Prevention) is a
gender-specific diversion program for girls who are involved or at risk of
becoming involved in the juvenile justice system. The goal of Girls' RAP is to
divert participants from self-destructive lifestyles and assist them in
developing skills for growth and success that will prevent repeat offenses and
promote their social, educational, and physical well being. The program has a
strong track record of success: over 80% of program participants stay out of
the juvenile justice system after they leave the program. RAP also operates a
26-week school-based prevention component for girls focused on truancy
reduction, prevention and conflict resolution. Participants are typically
referred to Girls’ RAP through the juvenile justice system or school
officials. For more information, contact 612-215-4361. |
Volunteer
Opportunities:
Discovery Leadership
Partner: To partner with other
women and girls in hands-on-learning about female leadership in the community.
Girls and women engage in dialogue around the history of female leadership,
issues of racism and privilege, and celebrate themselves as leaders. Girls and
women will work together to implement a social action project that will create
positive change in their community. *
Girl Power® Partner:
To partner with a group of girls and a YWCA Youth Counselor in hands-on-learning
around math and science and careers in these fields. Also includes heightening
girls’ sense of self-esteem and leadership. *
*The Discovery Leadership
and Girl Power® Partner require a commitment of attending a group once a week
for the entire school year (October-May). This allows our volunteers to really
become a part of the group and to connect with the girls.
Visit a Program!
We always welcome visitors to our
program! We would love to have you visit a program and share about yourself
with the girls. It is valuable for our girls to hear about different
professions and how you got where you are today. What schooling was required?
What subjects in school are important to your profession? Hands-on activities
are also encouraged and welcomed during a visit! Engage the girls in a mock
trial or other activity that would give them a better idea about your
profession.
For more information about
volunteering, contact Caitlin Walsh at 612-522-6559 ext. 3.
