MWL Public Policy Advocacy Committee:
Description and Goals
Fall, 2007

Background:
This past winter, 2006-2007 MWL President Mary Vasaly convened a taskforce to examine whether MWL should take a more active role in public policy issues, and if so, what issues.  The formation of this Taskforce was consistent with the objectives outlined in MWL’s 2004-2009 Strategic Plan.  Through their work, the Policy Taskforce created a series of recommendations that were reviewed and approved by MWL’s Board of Directors in Spring, 2007.  (Click HERE to view the MWL Policy Taskforce recommendations).

In follow-up to the Board approved recommendations, the MWL Public Policy Advocacy Committee has been formed and is setting its agenda for the next 1-5 years.

Committee Description:
The MWL Public Policy Advocacy Committee facilitates public policy advocacy activities by making recommendations to the Board on issues that MWL should advocate and provides the implementation steps for those activities. Activities may include facilitating legislative tracking on selected issues and providing testimony at hearings, identifying cases for which MWL should submit amicus briefs and issues on which MWL should submit letters to the editor and otherwise take a public position.

Committee Goals:

bulletTo educate specific publics about key issues
bulletTo affect a desired policy on key issues

Committee Leadership:
M. Susan Burns, Attorney, 612/306-4143
