Collaborating and Celebrating

It is hard to believe that I am writing this column for the last time.  My year as President has flown by quickly and has been a truly satisfying experience.  I have thoroughly enjoyed representing this organization and interacting with so many wonderful members.

When I began my year as President, the four main goals and themes I hoped to focus on all began with the letter “C” -- Connect, Communicate, Collaborate and Celebrate.  The last two themes are the focus of my remarks in this edition.

Collaboration is defined as “a structured, recursive process where two or more people work together toward a common goal—typically an intellectual endeavor that is creative in nature—by sharing knowledge, learning and building consensus.”  MWL members are constantly working together toward the common goal which is our mission -- “securing the full and equal participation of women in the legal profession and in a just society.”

The MWL Board of Directors collaborates with the Executive Committee and Executive Director to lead the organization.  Our committee members collaborate to carry out the many goals and activities planned each year.  MWL’s chapters in greater Minnesota collaborate to provide relevant programming and information to those practicing within their region.  It would be great to see MWL’s collaborative efforts continue to blossom and for MWL to collaborate further with other bar organizations in this state.

Lastly, but certainly not least, it is important we take the time to celebrate the many successes of this organization and our members.  On February 12th, we were able to pursue this goal at the 1st Annual MWL Winter Celebration.  One highlight of the evening was a keynote address by Jan Crawford Greenburg who provided insight into the U.S. Supreme Court from her many opportunities to interview various Justices.  Another success and reason to celebrate that evening was the silent auction which raised money for the newly created MWL Scholarship Fund.

MWL members will have another opportunity to celebrate at the 36th Annual Meeting luncheon on Thursday, May 15th at Windows on Minnesota in the IDS Center.  At this event, we will welcome a new slate of leaders for the organization, including incoming President, Luz Maria Frias; honor the recipients of the Myra Bradwell, Service to MWL, MWL Leadership and Equal Justice awards; and celebrate the many successes that we have achieved this past year.

This issue of “With Equal Right” focuses on preparing for a career in politics after law.  We are honored to live in a state where women are thriving as political leaders from the local to the national level.  It would be exciting, however, if more women considered a career in politics.  We hope the articles and information you read today will inspire many MWL members to answer the call of public service.

Before I go, I would like to thank Deb Pexa, MWL’s Executive Director, for her constant guidance and assistance this past year.  Deb’s continued dedication to furthering the mission of MWL is greatly appreciated.  I would also like to thank Membership and Communications Coordinator, Gina Winther, for her hard work and commitment to MWL.  Lastly, I enjoyed working with the many talented members of the Board of Directors, Advisory Board and those who served as Committee Co-Chairs.  It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as MWL’s President this past year.  I want to wish you all the best in your future endeavors and don’t forget to take time to Connect, Communicate, Collaborate and Celebrate!
