Connecting

Earlier this year, I thought about what goals and themes I would focus on during my year ahead as President of Minnesota Women Lawyers.  For some reason, four words that all began with the letter “c” came to mind -- Connect, Communicate, Collaborate and Celebrate.  I believe there are many ways we can accomplish these four things throughout the coming year.  In this article, I would like to focus on the first of the four themes.

As an extrovert, I am one who gets my energy from connecting with people.  As a recruiter, I rarely have a day that isn’t filled with numerous interactions with individuals.  Just think about it.  From the moment we were born we began connecting with others.  First, it was our parents and family.  Throughout our childhood and adolescent years we constantly connected with our peers.  As adults, it would be difficult to look back and count how many different individuals with whom we have interacted over the years.

In our daily lives, we have many ways in which we connect with others.  Current technology allows us to connect even more rapidly than ever before.  Our grandparents remember a time when face-to-face or communication by mail or telephone were the only ways to connect.  With e-mail, instant messaging, and websites like Facebook.com, MySpace.com and LinkedIn.com, connections happen more frequently in this day and age.  There is still something to be said, however, about the importance of making face-to-face connections.

In the legal profession, it is imperative we connect not only with clients, but with jurors, judges, and our colleagues, to name a few.  In fact, most of the connections we make are important to the success of our case or the deal we are negotiating.  Some experts estimate that only a small percentage of your success comes from your skills or knowledge and the vast majority comes from your ability to connect with other people and engender trust and respect.

My hope is that we will have ample opportunity throughout the year to connect with the many members of our organization.  I look forward to meeting new members at each MWL event or meeting I attend.  I would encourage each of you take the time to connect with someone new at the many exciting events we have planned this year.

On October 23rd, our members will have the opportunity to connect with one another at the 13th Annual Rosalie Wahl Leadership Lecture.  National Association of Women Lawyers President, Holly English, will the keynote speaker at this event.  Holly is a successful Labor and Employment attorney and author of the book, Gender on Trial: Sexual Stereotypes and Work/Life Balance in the Legal Workplace

This winter, we will have two social events which will provide the perfect venue for mixing and mingling.  Our Annual Holiday Benefit will be held on Thursday, November 29th.   During this event, not only will we honor two domestic abuse organizations in Minnesota, but we will enjoy the opportunity to socialize during the holiday season.  A new event to the MWL calendar will be our 1st Annual winter celebration in February.  What better time of the year is there to get out of our homes, connect with members of the legal profession and celebrate the many achievements of women in law.

As this year slowly comes to an end, I hope you will take the time to connect with family, friends, colleagues, clients and especially the many members of our organization.
