From the President Janury 2008 With Equal Right Connecting Happy New Year! I hope your 2008 is off to a great start. In the last issue, I focused on “Connecting, the first of four themes around which I am structuring my year as President. The second theme is “Communicating”. It is hard to deny that the success of any relationship or organization depends on effective communication. With today’s technology, communication happens in many ways, shapes and forms. Whether it’s face-to-face conversation or written communication through mail, fax, e-mail or instant messaging, the way we convey information happens at a rapid pace. As an organization, MWL strives to communicate in the most effective and efficient manner possible. This year, a new Communications Committee was launched to evaluate and assist in the way we communicate with our membership and with the legal community at large. In the internet age, our website plays a crucial role in our communications efforts. This year, our Technology Committee is undertaking the task of evaluating our website and proposing ways in which it can be enhanced. Another important way MWL communicates with our membership is this magazine. The Publications Committee devotes countless hours to each informative, quarterly issue. This issue of With Equal Right focuses on our organization and the many bright, talented MWL members. The “My MWL Story” section communicates the many ways our members have been involved and benefited by involvement in this organization. My MWL story began a few years after I graduated from law school. I am sad to admit that I wasn’t involved with MWL as a law student. After becoming an MWL member, I started attending the Professional Development Committee meetings and volunteering my time. A former law school classmate of mine was actively involved on the committee and introduced me to others. I enjoyed coordinating the many programs sponsored by this committee. The next year, I was asked to co-chair the committee, a role I gladly accepted and held for two years. After that time, I was encouraged to put my name in for a position on the Board of Directors and was selected. I spent four years serving on the board under the leadership of Lisa Montpetit Brabbit, Sara Schwebs, Trudy Halla and Jean Holloway. After two terms as a Board member, I had the pleasure of serving as Secretary under the leadership of Dani Deering and then was honored to be selected as President-Elect in 2006, serving one year in that role while Mary Vasaly led the organization. I am now more than half-way through my year as President and have enjoyed the experience immensely. Throughout my time as an MWL member, I have always appreciated how my involvement has kept me connected to the legal profession, allowed me to gain valuable leadership experience and provided ample opportunity to network with accomplished female attorneys. I look forward to many more years of MWL involvement and hope you too will continue to develop your own MWL story. We have a few exciting events planned in
2008. Please mark your calendar for the 1st Annual MWL Winter Celebration on
Tuesday, February 12th. Jan Crawford Greenburg, ABC News correspondent and New
York Times bestselling author of Supreme Conflict, will be our keynote
speaker. This event will feature a silent auction benefiting our newly created
law student scholarship fund along with the opportunity to mix and mingle with
members of the legal community. On March 13th, the annual Joint Dinner of
Women’s Professional Associations will take place at the Metropolitan. As
professional women, it is always nice to have the opportunity to come together
and share our experiences. Later this spring, we will try a new format for our
36th Annual Business Meeting. This event will be a luncheon featuring the
election of new officers and chance to honor MWL’s award recipients. I hope to
see you at one or more of these MWL events. Click below to read more: |
