Who We Are:

TVbyGIRLS is a nonprofit organization that uses the tools of media to work with girls, ages 11 to 19 to develop leadership, critical thinking, collaborative working skills and intercultural understanding.  Led by women media professionals, girls from all cultural communities learn how media shapes our perceptions and gain technical skills to actually CREATE media work that reflects their own stories and power..

Exposed to over 1000 images a day, Media is one of the most powerful tools for communicating social behavior and values. Unfortunately, most of those 1000 images do not encourage intellect, creativity, leadership or compassion.   TVbyGIRLS not only teaches about how the media works but we actually put the media into girls hands. They get the tools to infuse the media with their voices. Girls create films based on the issues important in their lives that are viewed by thousands of people. They not only become leaders but they actually provide alternative ways of seeing the world to their peers through film screenings, educational venues, the TVbyGIRLS website and soon, a TVbyGIRLS broadcast series on television and the internet.

Using media analysis and media making, we provide a venue for girls to make a larger impact on their peers, community and social change. Our philosophy is based on each girl using her skills and talents to make an impact on creating a more just and compassionate society.

What we offer:
Girls work with TVbyGIRLS in a variety of ways including workshops (long term and short term) mentoring and the creation of film and television projects.

Our short-term workshops are open to all girls and are an introduction to our curriculum model and philosophy. Girls work with still images and conceptual thinking, making posters and print public service announcement ads. They are introduced to collaboration, the emotional aspect of images and cultural perceptions of gender roles through advertising. Girls excited by the work in this workshop generally move into longer-term workshops or our mentoring program.

Our long-term workshop model works within specific cultural communities with girls who already have a relationship with each other in some way. These workshops are an opportunity for a group of girls to create together around a theme of importance to the group. The TVbyGIRLS philosophy of girl driven decision-making, multiple points of view on any issue and strong visual and metaphorical language is present in each workshop. Very often girls from these workshops continue to work with us in mentoring programs.  These workshops run 6 to 8 weeks

In our long term mentoring program, each girl is assigned an individual adult mentor who works with the specific learning styles, challenges and strengths of that individual girl. This is our most comprehensive work, continuing with girls over several years and expanding their leadership opportunities and challenging their media making skills.  We have worked with some girls for over five years.

Volunteer Opportunities:

bulletDirect volunteer efforts: TVbyGIRLS is always seeking energetic volunteers to sponsor or plan events, such as fundraising events and discussion and screening events, assist with public relations and publicity for activities, provide connections to broadcast venues, and to contribute internet and computer expertise.  TVbyGIRLS is also always interested in new Board Members to plan events and fundraising activities.
